Reading

Reading is a vital skill for anyone who wishes to succeed in life. It also plays an important role in developing and strengthening all other language skills.

Reading brings many benefits. It helps students expand their vocabulary and improve their writing, grammar, reading, and even listening skills. Through regular reading, students are repeatedly exposed to useful vocabulary, sentence structures, language patterns, and expressions. Students are encouraged to read a wide range of materials, including both fiction and non-fiction.

Our school library offers a variety of reading materials, such as magazines, comics, mystery stories, and graphic novels. Students are also encouraged to take the initiative to look for suitable reading materials in local libraries.

In addition, the school subscribes to online reading platform, Raz-Kids. Students can also join the Battle of the Books Club and take part in the internal English Reading Reward Scheme for S.1–S.2 students.

For S.3–S.4 students, selected books will be assigned to enrich their language skills and deepen their understanding of national education.

Most importantly, students should read as much as possible and, above all, read for enjoyment. The more they read, the more they will enjoy reading.

International Young Readers’ Festival – Meet-the-author Session

Students explored the craft of writing in a “Meet-the-Author” session organised by the Hong Kong International Literary Festival. During the session, they interacted with a real author and gained unique insights from a diverse range of celebrated writers.

Speaking

A strong grasp of basic concepts makes any language easier to learn. At our school, we help students speak more naturally and fluently by guiding them to use appropriate vocabulary in real-life conversations through a variety of practical activities.

Students practise English in a wide range of settings, from casual conversational games and club activities to more formal contexts such as English debates and the Hong Kong Speech Festival. They are given many opportunities to develop their speaking skills, including delivering English announcements and participating in our “On Air” announcement programme.

Furthermore, students can improve their natural intonation and pronunciation through regular interaction with our Native English Teachers (NETs).

Writing

The ability to communicate effectively in a second language through writing is truly empowering.

Good writing involves both revising and rewriting. It requires proofreading and editing, and all writers benefit from going through this process. Students learn to pay close attention to teachers’ feedback and instructions. The revision stage is especially important, as it allows them to improve the content, organisation, vocabulary, and sentence structure of their work. Afterwards, they edit their writing to correct mistakes in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

To celebrate their achievements, students’ best pieces are published in the school’s annual writing anthology.
