Reading

Reading is an essential skill for anyone who wants to succeed in life, but it is equally important in helping you to develop and reinforce all your other language skills.

Reading is beneficial in many ways. It helps one to improve vocabulary, writing, grammar, and even reading and listening skills because you are constantly reminded of the vocabulary you may know, the sentence structure and language usage and expression.  It is recommended that students should read all types of material, fiction as well as non-fiction.

In our own school library there are many magazines, comics, mystery stories and graphic novels to explore.  Students can also an effort to find their own reading material from a local library.

In addition, the school subscribes to the online reading sites Raz-Kids and Scholastic. There is a Battle of the Books club and an internal Mini-Bob reading competition in forms 1 and 2.

The main point is for students to read as much as they can.  Most of all, read for pleasure. The more one reads, the more they will enjoy reading.

Speaking

A strong grasp of basic concepts makes any language easier to learn. We help students speak more naturally and fluently, teaching them to use appropriate vocabulary in real-world conversations through a variety of practical activities.

At our school, students practice their English in diverse settings, from casual conversational games and club activities to formal environments like English debate and the Hong Kong Speech Festival. Students have numerous opportunities to hone their speaking skills, such as by delivering English announcements and participating in our "On Air" announcement programme.

Furthermore, students can practice and learn natural intonation through regular interaction with our Native English Teacher (NET).

Writing

The ability to communicate effectively in a second language through writing is incredibly empowering.

Good writing means both revising and rewriting; it involves proofreading and editing, and all writers benefit from this process. Students learn to pay close attention to teacher feedback and instructions. The revision stage is crucial, as it is when they improve the content, organization, vocabulary, and sentence structure of their work. Afterwards, they edit to correct mistakes in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

To celebrate their achievements, students have their best writing published in an annual school anthology.

Furthermore, the Creative Writing ECA, a weekly club led by our NET teacher, allows students to explore various forms of writing, including poetry, narrative, and expressive pieces. Students are also encouraged to hone their skills by participating in the many external writing competitions offered by partner organizations.
